NATO-SPS Project Support for DPÜ for the First Time
The project titled “High Entropy Boride Materials for Energy Storage Devices,“ in which Kütahya Dumlupınar University is one of the leading institutions, has been granted support from the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program (NATO-SPS).
The project, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Hasan Göçmez from the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Metallurgy and Materials, is the first in the university’s history to receive NATO-SPS funding and is expected to significantly contribute to both scientific advancements and the development of international collaborations.
The project team includes coordinator Prof. Dr. Hasan Göçmez, along with DPÜ Faculty of Engineering faculty memebers Prof. Dr. Mustafa Tuncer and Dr. Hülya Biçer, Prof. Dr. Emre Erdem from Sabancı University, and international partners Prof. Dr. Iurii Bogomol and Assoc. Prof. Levgen Solodkyi from the National Technical University of Ukraine. Additionally, the Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TUSAŞ) R&D Technology Directorate has supported the project with a letter of endorsement.
Rector of Kütahya Dumlupınar University Hosted The Project Team in His Office
Rector, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak, welcomed the project team in his office and received updates on their work.
Project Coordinator Prof. Dr. Hasan Göçmez explained that the project, supported with a 36-month duration and a budget of 400,000 euros, aims to research and develop high-entropy boride materials for energy storage devices with high added value in Kütahya, which has the world's largest boron reserves. Prof. Dr. Göçmez noted that recent studies have shown these materials exhibit superior properties such as high thermal, mechanical, electronic, and chemical stability due to their multi-element compositions. He emphasized their growing importance in applications such as catalysis, energy storage, and structural materials. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Göçmez stated that the collaboration with the National Technical University of Ukraine, which began in 2016 through the Project-Based Mevlana Program, and has continued with TÜBİTAK and NATO-SPS projects, sets an example for the sustainability of international partnerships.
PROF. DR. KIZILTOPRAK: BORON-RELATED RESEARCH IS A PRIORITY FOR DPÜ
Our Rector, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak, congratulated the project team on their significant achievement and stated, “Since more than half of the country’s boron reserves are located in Kütahya, boron-related research is among the priority areas of Kütahya Dumlupınar University. We are establishing infrastructure at our university, supported by the Presidency of Strategy and Budget, to enable studies on high-performance boron products. Through the work carried out in these laboratories, we aim to contribute to the development of boron and boron-based materials that will benefit the regional and national economy. Similarly, the project supported by the NATO-SPS program will not only contribute to the technological development of energy storage devices but also enhance our university's international recognition and scientific reputation.”
